EGAT’s Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT)
Language of presentation: English
Renewable energy plays a key role for sustainable energy future, both in Thailand and ASEAN countries, yet it is undeniable that increasing massive renewable penetration will have a significant impact on the performance and reliability of the main power grid due to its intermittency generation. Therefore, it is crucial to create “Firm Green Energy” with low cost, high stability and less impacts on environment and communities. One of the solutions to achieve this is to combine renewable energy sources into a hybrid power system. This presentation will focus on EGAT’s Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid Project, including potential sites and development guideline as well as its function and benefits. The highlight is placed on the 1st pilot project at Sirindhorn Dam with integration of Energy Management System (EMS) specially designed to enable automatically control, monitoring and optimization of hybrid generation performance.

Biomass fuels come from many source materials resulting in a wide range of properties. The properties relevant to combustion are briefly reviewed. The compositions of biomass among fuel types are variable, especially moisture and inorganic constituents important to the combustion process. Various properties of biomass are subject to the trade standards. KU-Biomass Laboratory has a capacity to advise clients on testing and determining the quality of biomass. Although biomass has potential use as fuel it has several disadvantages, such as relatively low heating efficiency and hydrophilic property. Pretreatment protocol can improve the fuel property of the biomass to high quality level.

Electrical hybridization: the future of EVs? by King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok
Conducted in English
EVs require high power for acceleration, which eliminates the limited energy of batteries and shortens their life cycle. In order to increase the driving performance, an electrical hybridization between the main energy source or batteries with a high-power auxiliary source such as a pack of supercapacitors is a suitable choice for EVs. This article presents four possible structures used to hybrid a pack of supercapacitors into the main batteries to provide the dynamic powers for EVs. The simulation and experimental results showed the hybridization of the batteries and a pack of supercapacitors in various conditions to increase the life cycle of the batteries. In addition, the analysis shows the energy management of the hybrid system and the electrical behaviors of both sources. Finally, the comparison between the advantages and limitations of each topology is also included.

An industrial heat exchanger is important on heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Therefore, the research and development play a critical role on the innovative heat exchanger. During the recent decades, the spiral fin and tube heat exchanger is preferred to be used with thermal industrial application. The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the influence of louver fin patterns on the air-side heat transfer performance and friction characteristics, which is the novel type of spiral finned tube. The geometry of louver spiral fin is designed in order to generate more turbulent flow and good mixing in the air side. Especially, this novel spiral fin pattern is on the challenges of research and development (R&D) for support the innovation and thermal industrial application.

Biohydrogen Production from Dark Fermentation Effluent by Using MFC-MEC Coupled System by Prince of Songkla University
บรรยายภาษาไทย
Hydrogen can be potentially produced from effluent of dark fermentation by using bio- electrochemical system, which is consisted of microbial fuel cell (MFC) as a power source for microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). However, the voltage output of the most MFC is not enough to power MEC. In this investigation, hydrogen production from dark fermentation effluent by using an MFC-MEC system is feasibly demonstrated by connecting the capacitor circuit (two arrays of capacitor) between MFC and MEC to boost voltage generated from the MFC to sufficiently supply to MEC. The system was conducted in fed-batch mode for 14.7 h. Dark fermentation fed with 20 g-xylose/L could generate hydrogen production rate of 1061.72 mL-H2/L-D, corresponding to hydrogen yield of 148.27 mL-H2/g VS. The voltage generated from MFCs and voltage input of MECs (Discharged from capacitor circuit) was approx. 0.133 V and 0.265 V respectively, after operating time of 7 h. The final concentration of hydrogen in MEC head space was 61% and methane was not detected. This system can be used for hydrogen production at low voltage output of 0.133 V from MFCs, providing alternative way to increase voltage in MFC-MEC coupled system.

Thermal properties and Fire behavior of wall plastered with PS and hemp fiber by Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin
Conducted in English
When polystyrene (PS) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) wastes were mixed into the sand aggregate, the physical-mechanical properties of mortar changed. The properties of mortar with PS were found to be better than that of the mortar with HDPE. The mortar with 10% PS has the highest compressive strength at 399.69 kg/cm2 compared with standard mortar and the mortar with HDPE. The thermal conductivity of a wall plastered by mortar containing PS decreased as the PS content was increased, whereas the thermal conductivity of a wall plastered by mortar containing HDPE increased as the HDPE content was increased. The thermal conductivities of walls plastered with the PS mortars were lower than that of the wall plastered with the reference mortar and the HDPE mortars. Thick crack observed in the reference wall while hair line crack occurred from the wall plastered with PS. The 10.0% PS could be used as a partial replacement for sand in mortar with an improvement in the physical and mechanical properties of mortar. The results implied that PS waste has a good potential for developing ecological building materials by reducing the demand for natural sand and the amount of plastic waste released into the environment.
